Limerick City

Limerick city, situated on the west coast of Ireland at the mouth of the river Shannon, is the Republic of Ireland's third largest city.  Limerick was founded as a Viking fortress in the 10th century.  Reminders of the city's eventful past include the 12th century King John's Castle, the medieval precinct and St. Mary's Cathedral.  There are many more buildings of interest in Limerick, see Limerick Landmarks to find out where they are and suggested walking routes.  The population of Limerick city is just under 60,000 and with half of the city's population under 30 and three institutions of higher education, there is a vibrant student culture in the city!

Limerick offers many activities for students, including a variety of sports, historical, artistic, and theatrical activities.  There is a lively pub music scene catering for a variety of musical tastes, from Irish traditional music to jazz.    Limerick.ie has lots of information on visiting and living in Limerick.

Around Limerick

Limerick provides excellent access to all major routes and is just 25 minutes from Shannon International Airport.  Some of  the most beautiful scenery and tourist destinations in the Shannon Region are on Limerick's doorstep, e.g. the Cliffs of Moher, Adare Manor and Village, and Bunratty Castle.

Ireland

Ireland is an island in the North atlantic to the west of Great Britain, with a temperate maritime climate.  The total area of the island of Ireland is just over 70,000 sq km, with a population of 4.5 million in the Republic of Ireland, 40% of whom reside in the greater Dublin area.

Ireland offers breathtaking landscapes, rural idylls and buzzing urban hubs for discovery. Throughout the year, there are a huge variety of festivals to be found all around the country.  Despite its relatively small size, Ireland boasts dramatically contrasting landscapes, all within driving distance.  Please see Discover Ireland for extensive information for visitors.
