Location
Perugia is located halfway between Florence and Rome in Umbria, a region known as the “green heart of Italy” for its lush natural resources and central location. Umbria is large and diverse, abundant with mountains, lakes, river valleys, and sprawling agricultural fields. Its local hilltop towns, traditional cuisine, and scenic panoramic views are signature characteristics of the region.

As the regional and provincial capital, Perugia is a must-see for visitors to the area. This authentic and intimate city exudes local pride for its art, tradition, and food, not to mention its 2,500-year-old history.

Life in Perugia
What makes Perugia, Italy so special? This city owes much of its appeal to the thriving student scene, making it an ideal place for a study abroad program. Often referred to as Italy’s “university city,” Perugia is home to over 40,000 students who attend both the Università degli Studi di Perugia, one of the oldest universities in the world, and the Università per Stranieri, a school that boasts a large number of international students. The result is a city rich in cultural flavor, one that is constantly injected with new life and vigor from its diverse student population. Whether you venture out amidst the bustle of Corso Vanucci or socialize on the steps of Piazza IV Novembre, Perugia’s energy is unavoidable. With the endless number of restaurants, jazz cafes, piano bars, cinemas, museums, and theaters, there’s never a shortage of things to see and do.

As a student in Perugia, you will have the chance to truly engage yourself in Italian life and culture. Opportunities to learn the language and mingle with the locals are everywhere, while students who study in bigger cities like Rome and Florence often find themselves unable to move beyond the tourist sphere. The city of Perugia is your classroom, and by taking advantage of all it has to offer, you can ensure that your study abroad experience is one of a kind.

Housing
The Umbra Institute provides housing for students in the historic center of Perugia. These apartments are within close proximity of the Umbra Institute’s facilities and other local resources, such as pharmacies, banks, supermarkets, and the post office.

Adapting to typical Italian housing will allow you to gain insight on the local life and culture. Though student apartments vary, each is fully furnished with kitchen and bathroom facilities. Bedrooms will have two beds per bedroom and shared closet space. Kitchens include a refrigerator, stove, sink, pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery.  Students are also provided with sheets, blankets, and pillows. Bathrooms include a toilet, bidet, and either a shower or bathtub, and are shared with a maximum of five students.

Additionally, some apartments may include the following: a television, microwave, full oven, a desk, antique furniture, a washing machine (dryers are extremely uncommon as they are costly in Italy), a dishwasher, more than one bathroom to be shared with less than five students, an elevator, or cleaning service (for kitchen and bath only).

Students are informed of housing procedures and assistance during Orientation.  The Umbra Institute Housing Staff will assist with everyday concerns, such as lack of hot water, broken appliances, or other housing needs.

Students may also opt for a Home Stay where one resides with a local Italian family.
