Fulbright U.S. Student Program

What is the Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program. It offers various grants to students to study, teach, or conduct research during an academic year abroad. The program's primary goal is to foster mutual understanding and support peaceful relations between the United States and other nations.

In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities for U.S. citizens in all academic disciplines.  Fulbright winners are passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds.

Fulbright U.S. Student applications are submitted in the summer before the student's senior year. The award funding is for the year immediately after a student completes their degree.
Here is a typical timeline:

  • Students review and consider the Fulbright in their junior spring, and prepare their application materials in the summer.
  • In September of their senior year, students submit their finalized materials
  • Fulbright/IIE selects and announces semifinalist and finalist winners between January and May
  • Students graduate in May
  • Fulbright awards fund the year abroad beginning in August.

Candidates with some research experience (for Study/Research) or teaching experience (for English Teaching Assistantships)  are preferred but these are not requirements to apply. Fulbright notes selection criteria on their siteGrant lengths and dates vary by award. Please consult the specific award description for details.
