The University
Ewha is one of Korea's most prestigious private universities and the largest women's university in the world. Since opening its doors in May, 1886, to accomodate a single student, Ewha has continued to evolve throughout its 124-year history of dedication and challenge as it sought to improve the lives of oppressed women. Currently, Ewha enrolls over 14,000 undergraduate and over 5,000 graduate students.
 
Ewha was founded by a Methodist missionary called Mary F. Scranton in 1886. Mrs. Scranton's first-year class consisted of a single student. But while polite society mocked the idea of trying to teach females anything other than the art of serving husband and son, King Kojong gave the enterprise his blessing. It was King Kojong who gave the school its name in 1887, and "Ewha" means "Pear Blossoms." The original campus was covered with them, and many historians speculate that a grove of pear trees near the Scranton home inspired the name. The image of the pear blossom is incorporated in the school's logo. To the early Ewha students who lived and studied in the Scranton home, the pear blossoms must have been a distinctive and memorable feature of their educational experience. Seoul
The fifth largest city in the world, the Seoul metropolis has a population of about 11 million and is the center for economy, finance, the arts and culture.  Seoul is known to be one of the safest places to travel in with its low crime rate.  There is a blend of old and new in Seoul with the modern high-rises and trendy shops mixed in with ancient temples and palaces.  Shopping is not a problem with the many department stores and street shops located around the city.  People are very sociable and kind to visitors in Seoul.  You will always see people in groups laughing and walking along the streets.   
Although English is taught in school, most Koreans have problems with pronunciation.  Since they can read English very well, it's a good idea to write down questions. 

The public transportation in Seoul is excellent and will take you to almost any place you need to go whether it's by taxi, bus, or subway.  Traffic congestion is a big problem in Seoul, so the quickest way of getting around Seoul is generally by subway. 

The Han River flows through the center of Seoul.  Encircling the city are rocky mountains which makes Seoul blend nature and modernization beautifully.  The center of Seoul has a mountain called Namsan, which has a tower on top that enables one to see almost all of the city on a clear day.

Courses
Almost all courses offered at Ewha are open to exchange and visiting students. Courses are typically worth three credits, meeting 3 hours a week. Full-time students are required to take a minimum of 12 credits to a maximum of 18 credits per semester. The credit values at Ewha are the same as the credit values at the University of Scranton. Some of the courses offered at Ewha include courses in the following disciplines: Accounting, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Communication and Media Studies, Economics, Finance, Gender Studies, History, International Business, International Relations, Management, Marketing, Political Science, Psychology and Women's Studies. Accommodation
Ewha's new three dormitories will provide you with an opportunity to experience various cultures with students from diverse backgrounds. Each House accommodates 100 to 600 students and has a hall, common rooms, and facilities for academic, recreational, and cultural activities. The house will be assigned according to students' admitted programs.

Undergraduate Student dormitory (Hanwoori Hall): Hanwoori Hall was constructed in 1999. Only regular undergraduate students (including EGPP students) are allowed to stay at Hanwoori. Rooms are furnished with basic furniture including beds, desks, closets, and telephones. Students at Hanwoori Hall can have meals in the dorm cafeteria. The Hanwoori Hall has study rooms, a fitness room, a health center, computer rooms, laundry rooms, kitchenettes and a convenience store. Internet access is available in each room.

Dormitory Complex : Ewha now has a brand new dormitory complex located right across the International Education Building. The construction of this dormitory complex had started in October 2004 and was completed in August 2006. The complex consists of 3 buildings: two for graduate students called Graduate Student dormitory A and B, one for international exchange students called the Ewha-Samsung International House. As subsidiary facilities, there are two computer labs, two laundry rooms, reading rooms, seminar rooms, kitchenettes, ironing rooms, a gym, a lounge, and a convenience store. Internet access is available in all rooms.

Student Cafeteria: It is a self-serving cafeteria with 1,500 seats. Students choose their favorite menus and return the dishes by themselves. Meals are ready served in plates so each student can select one. Prices are low and it saves time. Popular menus amongst the students always sell out fast, so you might want to hurry. The menu includes pizza, salads, fried rice, and many more that are favorites of the younger generation. You can also have bean coffee at a low price. You may easily find many students gathered together to do their projects, homework, or just to chat.
